Yokoso Japan!First of all I would like to thank god for providing such a good plan for me. I was so busy when embarking into my third year. Thank God AMSC Tokyo occurred during with my Medicine
and Society posting, so I got the chance to enjoy this wonderful educational conference.
There were a lot of preparations needed to be done before going for such an exciting event. First of all was the fund-raising activity. I was in the marketing department. This provided me a
chance to raise fund for the AMSC itself. It was a very fascinating event, going to the big company appealing for funds. Because of this, I really appreciate all the opportunities that AMSA offered me in Tokyo. In addition to that, I took part in the dancing team to
prepare for the cultural show.
After a few hours of flight, we reached Narita airport at dawn. We got to know a few AMSC delegates from Taiwan even before we reached the National Olympic Memorial Center. They
were really friendly. I was mesmerized and could not wait for the ice-breaking session.
There were plenty of exciting activities waiting for me every day. The welcoming event was a lecture delivered by a Japanese professor. He enlightened us with all the “heavy” info; so
not surprisingly, I slept during the lecture. Very embarrassing indeed! Besides, we had a small group discussion. It was just like another PBL session I attended during my first two clinical years.
In addition, I got a chance to visit Tokyo University as the paper presentation was held there. It was really a fantastic place to study. How I wish I was one of the students there…
Well, before I realized it, I was already in the train heading towards an old folks home in Japan. Believe it or not, you would be surprised by the hygienic status at the old folks home. All the
residents there were nicely taken care of by the trained staffs.
I also got a chance to visit the Tsukuba Hospital. It is one of the most famous hospitals in Tokyo which contains state-of-the-art facilities. It has a room which is equipped with a 2-tonne magnet to generate radiation for radiotherapy. They could make a mould the same size as the tumor to make sure that the radiation just fall on the malignant tissue only! They also had a sleeping study laboratory which helped patients with sleeping problems. The Professor there
also taught us about obstructive sleep apnea.
The most memorable activity of the conference was the cultural night. All the delegates from different parts of the world were dressed in their traditional costumes. I had the opportunity to
enjoy their fantastic performances. I spend 11 days in Japan and I made full use of my time
every day. Every night if possible, we would sneak outside to have fun. We visited Harajuku, Ichikawa, Shinjuku, Akihabara, and many other places. I joined the post conference trip on the 7th day as well and went to Tokyo Disneyland. All my childhood memories were recaptured there.
In Japan all the places were so clean and it was really so pleasant to be indulged in all those mesmerizing sceneries of Japan. The AMSC Japan committee also prepared a lot of healthy foods for us. Most of the meal was served in buffet style, so we ate continuously. Needless to say, we came back to Malaysia with a “tire” in our stomach.
